A technically brilliant founder in a nuclear adjacent scientific field could not close deals. The real decision makers were non technical buyers, and a deeply technical pitch never made it past the first meeting. I didn't hand him a sales methodology to drill. From the fractional CMO seat I rebuilt the whole go to market starting from branding and narrative, softening the visual identity and translating the underlying science into language the actual buyer could use. There's no predefined sales framework that fits a small, industry specific startup team out of the box. You start by understanding what's actually being sold, how, and to whom, because sales is storytelling, and the fix for a story that isn't landing is a better story, not a script the founder would resist anyway. The engagement is ongoing, with a simplified pitch and a deliberate personality pairing, a warmer salesperson alongside the technical founder, in place instead of trying to change who he fundamentally is. The fix for a broken sales process is rarely a sales methodology. It's translating what's actually true about the product into language the real buyer understands. I didn't try to make him into someone he wasn't. I built a system that let his real strength do the talking somewhere else.
