Overview

Jesse Fowler is a builder and operator with 25 years across real estate, technology, media, and capital. At Common Ground he is the Execution & Development principal, the seat responsible for turning strategy into delivered work.

Fowler built and ran Tellus Design + Build, a Southern California green construction company he started in 2004 and wound down through 2023. The firm kept architecture, estimating and construction under one roof with a team of more than 60 in the field, completed more than 400 projects and over $300M of built work, and did about $480M in business across its 19 years, spanning owner's representation, general construction, trade work and property maintenance, with more than $1B in architectural and construction projects completed. It was active on about $22M in construction projects when COVID began, carried custom homes and commercial work through the 2008 collapse and the pandemic, and wound down on his own terms.

Today he is principal of Lïef Development + Construction, a luxury residential developer and builder in Arizona, and a principal at Common Ground. His stated operating philosophy: find good people, build things that last, and play the long game.

His own record

Jesse keeps the full record of his work on his own site, in his own words: every engagement told from the seat he held, and his stories. jfowler.io/wiki

How he works

Construction was the world Jesse Fowler grew up in. The physical side, the job sites, the trades and the way a building goes together, came naturally. The business side came from his grandfather's company, Advanced Computer Communications, founded in 1974 in Goleta and Santa Barbara, California, which started by building the interface hardware that attached computers to the ARPANET as a DARPA subcontractor. From age thirteen until Ericsson bought the company in 1998, Fowler worked there in summers, part time and remotely, with direct access to every part of the business across its offices, and he was aware of the sale as it happened. That is where his drive to be an entrepreneur started.

One more thing came out of that family. His grandfather's early research on the network studied why people who had a working network were still not using it well. The technology was never the hard part, and Fowler still brings that question to every company he walks into, which is why he looks for the person before he looks at the system.

Development was always the core business. Fowler was a general contractor and developer for twenty years, and in that time his firms completed more than 500 projects: residential, commercial, and development they financed themselves. He held every seat the work has, specifying, selling, estimating, building, scheduling, managing property and sitting on the owner's side of the table as owner's representative. Over the past five years he cut development to a select few larger projects, and the fractional seats, which began in 2015 with a four-month turn as chief operating officer of a three-practice medical group, run in the gaps between them. Right now, between development projects, LÏEF is selling its building. LÏEF Builders now provides owner's representation, architecture, preconstruction and general contracting nationally, and Rebuild LA, its owner's representation offering in Los Angeles, runs through it.

His method starts with listening: good questions and good listening. If the fix were obvious, the company would have made it already, so the thing he is hired to fix is rarely the thing that is broken. Experience gives him an instinct for where to look first. From there the work is simplifying: find the quickest, most impactful move, the rock in the stream that everything else is piling up behind, and move it.

A lot of the breaks come down to the human. A great owner who is out of hours is not a process problem, and the fix is to carry part of the load until the owner can carry it again. Sometimes two partners each hold part of the picture and nobody has said so out loud. When it really is a process, there is still a person behind it, so Fowler asks who put it in, why, what was faulty in the original logic, and why it has to change now.

Many of these engagements should be more than one person, so he built Common Ground as a team of operators, five of them, covering capital, brand, technology, and his own seat, execution and development. AI goes into every engagement. The team runs it inside its own companies first, which shows quickly where it makes money and how well it works, and the work is results-based. People still come first: in early 2026 Common Ground stopped an outreach campaign because the automated version could not pass as human, and restarted it only when the copy was hand-written in the owner's voice. It worked the second time.

Common Ground has its own suite of advisory services, Kinwork, with three product lines inside it: Foyer Hall, the client portal and data room; Slipstream, search visibility for search engines, generative engines and language models; and Aegis Lens, the audit. The data-room pattern behind Foyer Hall let the team build seven private data rooms in parallel in a single day in June 2026.

When he finished college, Fowler chose a sequence of jobs, roughly nine months each, picked for the skill he thought he was worst at: two stretches selling cars at different lots, then mortgages, then AAA Auto Insurance, where he set a California record for auto-policy sales inside his first three months and was named salesperson of the month four times. The rule he took from it still runs his work: a test that has already produced its answer does not get better by running longer, so he leaves a seat when the constraint it existed to fix is fixed.

He built Tellus Design and Build's public identity as Southern California's first green construction company. He grew up in a messy industry and was trying to fix it, and he also saw green as a real differentiator when almost nobody was using it. Owning the category early is how the Discovery Channel found Tellus for the Greensburg, Kansas rebuild. He is a licensed general contractor (previous), LEED certified, Green Built certified and Delos Healthy Home certified, and holds 85 AI and automation certificates, 11 of them from Anthropic, alongside the Google Cloud generative AI and agent tracks and n8n's workflow automation series.

Most of his relationships began as engagements: someone hired him for a piece of work, the work got done, and it turned into a long working partnership.
